MUSCLE RELAXING INJECTIONS – Botox™
Botox™ injections for facial lines were pioneered in 1988 by Doctors Jean and Alistair Carruthers, a Vancouver Ophthalmologist and her husband, a Dermatologist. The Ophthalmologist noted that the wrinkles disappeared in her patients that were being treated with Botox™ for eyelid spasm. This led to further research which confirmed the effectiveness and safety of the Botox™ vaccine for improving wrinkles due to overactive muscles of the face.
Botox™ FOR FACIAL LINES
Crease lines and wrinkles are natural processes of the passage of time due to a combination of ageing, smoking, sun damage, gravity and the muscle action of laughing, talking, frowning and crying. Botox™ can effectively reduce the lines produced by muscle overactivity but not by gravity. As a rule of thumb, these are found in the upper half of the face. Gravitational lines in the lower half of the face are best treated with dermal fillers.
Botox™ FOR FROWN LINES (GLABELLAR LINES)
These vertical lines between the eyebrows are produced as a result of repeated frowning. These muscles are also used when concentrating. By drawing the eyebrows inward, one expresses anger, confusion or anxiety. Repeated often enough, permanent skin creases develop and even when relaxed, these frown lines remain. Neutralisation of these overactive brow muscles helps eliminate these negative appearances.
Botox™ FOR CROWS FEET
Wrinkles radiating from the corners of the eyes caused by smiling, laughing or squinting are especially distressing to some individuals. Previously, no reasonable medical solution improved this problem due to the strong underlying muscles. Even with the deepest chemical peels or laser resurfacing techniques, rapid recurrence of these lines around the eyes is inevitable. Now Botox™ has proved to be effective at preventing the recurrence of wrinkles by inhibiting the underlying muscles.
HORIZONTAL FOREHEAD LINES
Raising the eyebrows to express surprise or to emphasise a point can produce horizontal forehead lines. Botox™ can be very effective in neutralising these lines.
HYPERHIDROSIS (excessive localised sweating)
Botox™ is particularly successful for the control of excessive sweating of the armpits. The technique is slightly different from that employed for aesthetic Botox™ and can last for up to a year.
